Richmond, B.C. - MacDonald, Dettwiler and Associates Ltd. (TSX: MDA), a provider of essential information solutions, announced today the award of a contract by the United Nations World Food Program (UNWFP), for the delivery of daily rainfall information used to determine drought insurance payments for Ethiopia.
This contract is in support of an innovative new UNWFP pilot project to provide insurance against crop failure and associated humanitarian disaster resulting from drought.
Under this contract, MDA will analyze and process daily precipitation data received from 26 sensors installed across Ethiopia, and check this data against climatological models and against rainfall information derived from satellite data.
