Tagebau Hambach Mine, Germany

The Tagebau Hambach open-pit lignite mine near Elsdorf, Germany dominates the top of this RADARSAT-2 scene. The mine currently has a size of 33.89 km². Derived from a Fine Quad-Pol mode product with 8 m resolution, this 25 km x 25 km composite image allocates HH polarization to the red channel, HV to the green and VV to the blue. SAR satellites like RADARSAT-2 are used by the mining industry to perform InSAR analysis of their mine sites to watch for ground movement that can indicate areas of concern that require further monitoring.
