Chukchi Sea

Chukchi Sea

This image captures the Chukchi Sea, north of Alaska in the fall. The scene shows the edge of the permanent ice coverage, with new ice forming. This colour composite image is derived from a RADARSAT-2 ScanSAR Wide, dual polarization (HH/HV) scene, with the HH polarization mapped to the red channel, the HV to green and the combination of HH-HV to the blue channel. The image shows an area of 500 km x 500 km at 100 m resolution. The monitoring of sea ice has been one of the main applications of the RADARSAT program, since the launch of RADARSAT-1 in the mid-1990s.
