Common Operating Picture: MDA Oil Tracker™ Online

MDA provides a Common Operating Picture (COP) capability that is operationally proven, secure, and easy to use. The system takes away the data fusion complexities of integrating satellite, aerial, and in-situ sensor data with live AIS data streams, base mapping, and planning information. MDA’s common operating picture, MDA Oil Tracker™ Online, offers a platform that enables operators, supporting agencies, and organizations engaged in the response to make effective, consistent, and timely decisions.

MDA Oil Tracker™ Online provides easy access to near real-time satellite information anywhere in the world with COPs for areas of interest, and remote monitoring capabilities that form the basis for planning and response training before an incident occurs.

All of MDA Oil Tracker™ Monitoring Programs have the option to use the MDA Oil Tracker™ Online web portal, a sophisticated platform that can fuse data from numerous sources to provide additional value to support exploration and operational programs. Below are some selected examples from additional sources of information that can be integrated into the MDA Oil Tracker™ Monitoring Program:

  • Maritime ship identification including AIS and IHS (ship registry)
  • Metocean information including wind analysis
  • Local infrastructure mapping
  • Aerial reconnaissance information (imagery, flightlines, etc.)
  • Field staff commands
  • Other relevant geospatial information in mutually-agreed formats

Additional data can be integrated into both the standard MDA Oil Tracker™ deliverables as well as the MDA Oil Tracker™ Online web portal. MDA Oil Tracker™ is available as an internet-based service accessible through any web-browser, as a direct feed into customer systems, or as an enterprise-class system installed at customer locations.

MDA Partnered with Response Teams

MDA works closely with recognized global oil spill responders to improve satellite surveillance of oil spills, creating a fully integrated service that brings satellite information together with aerial and in-situ data. This results in simplified contracting and activation of near-real time satellite monitoring.

Situational Awareness

Situational awareness provided by a COP is vital throughout an incident, as it improves the accuracy of spill assessments and affected areas while increasing operational effectiveness of response efforts through improved understanding and communication.

Simplified Data Collection, Analysis, and Workflow

When used in combination with MDA Oil Tracker™, a COP simplifies data collection, analysis, and workflow by optimizing information dissemination through access, sharing, support tools, and trained personnel for more effective resource deployment, better decision-making processes, and stakeholder management.

Data Fusion

MDA Oil Tracker™ Online combines information derived from RADARSAT-2 with diverse additional data to generate a comprehensive maritime picture, previously unavailable through an unclassified commercial service. Other data sources include vessel tracking services (e.g. AIS, LRIT, VMS), vessel registration databases, historical maritime traffic records, metocean data, third party optical and radar satellites, watch lists, MOU lists, and customer-generated data such as coastal and airborne radar.

Common Operating Picture

Viewable on any web browser, MDA Oil Tracker™ Online provides an integrated Maritime Domain Awareness picture. The intuitive interface allows users to control displayed layers including vessel locations and types, oil spills, satellite imagery, metocean data, vessel registry data, and other contextual information. User-generated data such as KML, text notes, and watch lists can be imported.
