Corner Reflectors (CR)

InSAR requires either stable distributed targets (such as found in arid deserts) or bright point targets (such as buildings or rocky terrain), but in some areas of interest such as the muskeg covered regions of the Canadian oil sands, neither may exist.

The solution to the problems of an ever-changing land surface is to install corner reflectors on pilings anchored below the frost line. The corner reflector acts as an ideal point target for CTM InSAR processing and moves with the subsurface motion caused by reservoir changes.

A cost effective monitoring program and layout of corner reflectors is designed with the minimum number of corner reflectors necessary to correctly capture the expected rate of surface movement.
