Disaster Management

The fast delivery and all-weather imaging of RADARSAT-2 results in the near real-time delivery of critical information for first responders to disaster scenarios such as flood events. For large-scale urban monitoring, highly sensitive detection, measurement, and mapping of changes enable subsidence mapping and subsurface activity detection and early warning for densely populated areas.

Disaster Management Image Sample

Each year, disasters around the world adversely impact millions of people and cause billions of dollars in damage. SAR satellites are excellent resources for operational use in a variety of disaster management scenarios as a result of the ability to collect imagery independent of darkness or inclement atmospheric conditions.

RADARSAT data has been used effectively in the management of disasters such as floods, landslides and oil spills. The capability to deliver data in near real-time has been essential for relief agencies that require timely data for monitoring and mapping damage as well as for assessing the impact on future planning.

RADARSAT-2 provides improved operational information for disaster management and damage mitigation. Reduced planning lead times for data acquisitions, and the left- and right-looking modes on RADARSAT-2 provide greater revisits and up-to-date information that is required during times of emergency to supplement airborne and ground resources for local and regional damage assessment.

Rapid Response in an Emergency

RADARSAT-2 responsive collection ability, coupled with MDA’s reliable mission planning and customer service teams enable disaster response organizations to respond to events when they occur. Emergency tasking and near real-time delivery of satellite imagery mean that when an event occurs, MDA responds.

Imaging Flexibility

RADARSAT-2’s has the widest options for coverage and resolution available from any SAR mission. This flexibility allows MDA to collect the best imagery for any disaster scenario. Whether you need wide area coverage at moderate resolution, or high resolution over a smaller area, RADARSAT-2 can deliver.

Rely on Proven, Operational Flood Monitoring Capability

RADARSAT-2 imagery is used operationally by many government organizations to monitor flood conditions. RADARSAT-2 SAR imagery has a long track record of delivering reliable, consistent results.
FLOOD MONITORING: Near real-time delivery of critical flood information

Flood Monitoring in RussiaMDA’s Flood Monitoring capability enables local, regional and federal agencies to rapidly assess the impact of floods in areas ranging in size from cities to entire states. Using RADARSAT-2’s unique wide-area imaging capabilities, MDA can deliver accurate GIS-ready flood maps within hours of an emergency, regardless of weather conditions. Flood maps showing the location and extent of flooding are updated regularly as the disaster occurs, giving disaster relief agencies the information needed to effectively respond to the threat.

Flying hundreds of kilometers above the weather and capable of imaging directly through cloud, RADARSAT-2 is the “eye in the sky” providing critical information for disaster response teams around the world.

MDA FloodWatch is a subscription-based service that provides regular, weekly coverage of key areas during flood season, and the option to order additional emergency coverage when floods occur. MDA FloodWatch customers benefit from assured access to up-to-date information in an easy to use GIS format.

FLOOD MODELING: Accurately simulate floods and landslides
Drainage MapMDA provides a range of customizable Flood Modeling data products to enable government agencies to accurately simulate floods and landslides. Using RADARSAT-2, MDA provides 3D digital elevation models (DEM), drainage network maps, and water body vectors for use in flood and landslide hazard analysis. RADARSAT-2’s ability to rapidly acquire data through cloud cover gives end users access to the most up-to-date data available, and makes it the fastest, most economical choice for flood hazard mapping of large areas.
