​Imaging Modes

RADARSAT-2 is the most flexible, highest-capacity commercial SAR sensor, and provides customers in the agricultural sector with a range of SAR imagery options for every application. MDA has pioneered some of the work on the use of quad polarized data for use in agricultural monitoring, and our global customer base uses RADARSAT-2 imagery to monitor rice crops. Research has shown that quad polarized data can significantly increase the classification accuracy over dual polarized data.

Fine Quad-Pol

POLARIZATION: Quad

The Fine Quad Polarization mode provides full polarimetric imaging with the same spatial resolution as the Fine Resolution mode. Fine Quad Polarization mode products with swath widths of approximately 25 kilometres can be obtained covering any area within the region from an incidence angle of 18 degrees to at least 49 degrees.

Fine Quad-Polarization is also available in a wide variant. The Wide Fine Quad Polarization mode operates the same way as the Fine Quad Polarization mode, but with higher data acquisition rates, and offers a wider swath of approximately 50 kilometres at equivalent spatial resolution.

The Quad-polarization modes are very effective for agriculture customers, as the additional polarizations can improve the classification for crop monitoring and rice crop monitoring applications.

 Standard

Agriculture Standard Mode

NOMINAL RESOLUTION: 25 m
SWATH WIDTH: 100 km
POLARIZATION: Single or Dual

The Standard mode allows imaging over a wide range of incidence angles with a set of image quality characteristics which provides a balance between fine resolution and wide coverage, and between spatial and radiometric resolutions. The nominal incidence angle range covered by the full set of beams is 20 degrees to 52 degrees.

The Standard mode has long been a staple for many RADARSAT users, including those in the agricultural sector. Large area coverage at moderate resolution makes Standard a good choice for many crop monitoring applications.

The imaging modes identified in this section are a representative sample of the 20 imaging modes available on RADARSAT-2, and have been highlighted for their applicability to urban monitoring applications.
